Ngalan Wurun by Axis, RMIT (VIC)

Ngalan Wurun, meaning “Together Home” in the Woiwurrung language, is a four-storey modular residential complex in Northcote, Melbourne designed to provide inclusive, supported living for young people with disabilities. This innovative design solution reimagines disability housing by integrating accessibility, community connection, and sustainability at every level.

The building features prefabricated components manufactured off-site, enhancing construction efficiency, minimising waste, and enabling rapid deployment. Parametric design ensures flexible dwelling designs tailored to diverse needs, while robotic fabrication streamlines the process.

Each level includes shared outdoor areas, and the ground floor is a vibrant communal space that promotes social interaction and support. One and two bedroom units offer privacy and independence while remaining connected to community care and shared amenities.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the project through the selection of materials, incorporation of solar panels, rainwater collection and a circular economy approach to building lifecycle management. This not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances long-term resilience in a changing climate.

Ngalan Wurun goes beyond providing housing - it fosters a sense of belonging and dignity, enabling residents to live with autonomy, connection, and purpose. The design is a scalable model for inclusive urban living that redefines how we approach supported accommodation.
