Associate Prof. Dominik Holzer researches and teaches at Melbourne University’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. He is a highly regarded author, commentator, and presenter on Digital Practice, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Net Zero Carbon Design. He published Design Technology in Contemporary Architectural Practice in 2023, and the BIM Manager’s Handbook in 2016. Next to his work in Academia, Dominik runs the Design Technology Consultancy AEC Connect where he supports Industry and Government with strategic Technology implementation across different project types and scales.

From Factory to…AI? The acceleration of MMC with an AI focus

Dominik Holzer will offer a glimpse into the transformation of Architecture and Construction Practice through AI. As AI takes an ever-increasing stronghold in supporting automation within the built environment, many questions remain unanswered. As much as there has been a strong focus of AI support for conceptual design (a-la Midjourney), site management (Safety Management), and text-based searches (Claude/ChatGPT), the true value of AI often remains untapped when considering the much broader knowledge-base architects, contractors, and fabricators draw on in their everyday practice. This relates to the processing of project information destined for more efficient handling of prefabrication, including factors (such as building code compliance, project costing, supply chain integration, or the optimisation of production, assembly, and transport processes). Surprisingly little RnD has been undertaken in this space over the past few years, yet the potential for imminent and highly disruptive change is evident.
